• SOUTH LEWIS AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION & FFA

    By taking ANY agriculture course you are eligible to be an FFA member! Involvement in FFA activities and events is encouraged of all students.

    Course Title: Exploring Agriculture
    Grade Level: 9 -10
    Length: Full Year
    Prerequisites: None (willingness to learn and try new experiences)

    The purpose of this class is to provide you with a foundation in agriculture. Career awareness, career exploration and skill preparation are integral parts of the curriculum we will be studying. You will be given opportunities to acquire a broad understanding of all areas of modern agriculture. You will develop an awareness and appreciation of the many career opportunities in agriculture. We will focus on animal science, plant and soil science, basic woodworking, agricultural business and natural resources. In this class you will work individually and/or cooperatively within a group, develop and expand leadership abilities.  Students can also join the FFA organization, compete in land judging, leadership and production contests.         

    Course Title: Greenhouse Management A/B***
    Grade Level: 9 -12
    Length: ½ year – 2 classes
    Prerequisites: None
    (willingness to learn and try new experiences)
    Plants surround our lives everyday offering us beauty, oxygen, and opportunities to earn money.  This course will teach you the identification and proper care and management of common house and landscape plants as well as help you explore rewarding careers areas associated with plants.  You will develop skills such as propagation, pruning, plant maintenance, floral arrangement, landscape design, and greenhouse management.

    Course Title: Aquaculture
    Grade Level:  10 -12
    Length:  1/2 Year
    Prerequisites: None   (willingness to learn and try new experiences)
    This course deals with the history and development of the Aquaculture Industry.  Students in aquaculture will be responsible for the daily management of our recirculating tank system as well as designing and building their own small system for growing fish.  Water quality, fish anatomy & physiology and an overview of our Natural Fisheries will be also be covered.

    Course Title: Wildlife Conservation & Natural Resources
    Grade Level: 10 -12
    Length: 1/2 Year
    Prerequisites: None  (willingness to learn and try new experiences)
    This course will deal with wildlife and other resource issues that impact our local area.  Students will become involved with career awareness, hunter safety, wildlife management, hunting and fishing techniques, habitat development, soil and water conservation, woodlot management and other topics in Natural Resources.

    Course Title: Agricultural Mechanics
    Grade Level: 10 -12
    Length: Full Year
    Prerequisites: None
    This course is designed to give students a strong foundation in the use of
    all basic farm shop skills. Tools, materials, and safety will be reviewed when each unit is taught. Proper skills involving hand tools will be stressed. This basic course in mechanics includes drawing & design, woodworking, metalworking, welding, etc. Students will have the opportunity to work on approved individual projects. Leadership skills will be taught through participation in FFA.

    Course Title: Vet Science & Animal Care A/B***
    Grade Level: 10 -12
    Length: ½ year – 2 classes
    Prerequisites: Completion of or enrollment in Living Environment Course

    This course is the study of large and small animal science.  Animal examination, animal restraint techniques, vaccination, and proper animal nutrition are just a few of the topics you will study.  You will also study the history of animals in our society, systems of the animal body, behavioral patterns, what causes animal disease, how they affect humans, and how to treat them.  Career exploration in the field of Veterinary Medicine will be covered. Students in this class are responsible for the feeding and care of our classroom animals.

    Course Title: Environmental Science***
    Grade Level: 10 -12
    Length: Full Year
    Prerequisites: Completion of or enrollment in Living Environment Course

    Environmental Science is designed for students to gain an understanding of major environmental and ecological principles through class, lab, and field studies.  It is a survey course that allows many topics pertinent to the 21st century to be discussed.  The main topics in the course include Ecology, Renewable and Nonrenewable Resources, Environmental Quality in Land, Water and Atmospheric Systems, Global Environmental Changes and their Consequences, Human Population Growth Dynamics and Environmental Decision-Making including Cultural, Ethical, Legal Considerations and Societal Trade-Offs.

    ***THE SOUTH LEWIS AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT HAS AN ARTICULATION AGREEMENT BETWEEN SOUTH LEWIS HIGH SCHOOL AND S.U.N.Y. MORRISVILLE TO GRANT COLLEGE CREDIT IN THESE COURSES.
